Export Control Notice

What you must know before sending technical data to Leatherwood, an ITAR-registered manufacturer, and why none of it travels through this website.

Revision A ·

Leatherwood Manufacturing, Inc. is registered with the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Much of the work we quote involves technical data controlled under the ITAR, the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), or Department of Defense rules for Controlled Unclassified Information. The law places duties on both of us. This notice explains them.

  1. 1. What Counts as Technical Data

    Technical data includes drawings, models, specifications, process and work instructions, inspection data, software, and any other information required to design, develop, produce, manufacture, assemble, test, repair, maintain, or modify a part or assembly. It is technical data whether or not it carries a marking.

    Data is controlled when it is described on the United States Munitions List (ITAR), classified under an Export Control Classification Number on the Commerce Control List (EAR), or marked as Controlled Unclassified Information under a U.S. Government contract.

  2. 2. What Not to Send Through This Website or Unprotected Email

    Do not send any technical data through the forms on this website or through ordinary email, whether or not you believe it is controlled. This includes:

    • drawings, models, and specifications in any format;
    • dimensions, tolerances, and materials with their specifications;
    • part numbers paired with program or platform names;
    • any document that carries an export-control or Controlled Unclassified Information marking.

    The forms on this site collect business information only: who you are, what kind of work you need, and how to reach you.

  3. 3. How the Controlled Channel Works

    After you register, a Leatherwood point of contact authorized under our export compliance procedures contacts you within one business day. That person confirms the control status you provided and sets up the transfer method Leatherwood approves for your data. Drawings move only after that step.

    Leatherwood stores and handles controlled technical data inside its controlled environment, with access limited to personnel authorized under those procedures. Controlled data is never stored on or processed through this website.

  4. 4. Your Responsibilities

    • Classify your technical data before you send it, and tell us the United States Munitions List category or Export Control Classification Number that applies, or that the data is not controlled.
    • Mark documents that are controlled or that carry Controlled Unclassified Information.
    • Tell us about any restriction on foreign-national access that applies to your program, and about any license, agreement, or exemption under which you are sharing the data.
    • Obtain any export or re-export license required for the finished goods after delivery.
    • Confirm that your company and the end users of the goods are not denied, debarred, or restricted parties under U.S. law.
  5. 5. Our Commitments

    • We keep our registration with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls current.
    • We limit access to controlled technical data to personnel authorized under our export compliance procedures, and we screen that access as the ITAR requires.
    • We do not transfer controlled technical data to a foreign person, including our own suppliers, without the authorization the law requires.
    • We tell you promptly if we learn that data was sent to us outside the controlled channel, and we contain it.
  6. 6. Companies Outside the United States

    Leatherwood works with companies outside the United States only where U.S. export law permits and the required authorization is in place. If your company is located outside the United States, or if foreign persons will need access to the work, call (843) 744-4500 before you register so we can determine whether and how we can proceed.

  7. 7. Questions

    If you are not sure whether your data is controlled, treat it as controlled and call us at (843) 744-4500. A person who handles export compliance will help you sort it out before anything is sent.

This notice describes Leatherwood's procedures and does not constitute legal advice on your own export obligations.
